FAQ

What is an Athletic Trainer?

Athletic Trainers (ATs) are highly qualified, multi-skilled healthcare professionals who render service or treatment, under the direction of or in collaboration with a physician, through their education, training, and state regulations. As a member of the health care team, services provided by ATs include primary and/or emergent care, injury/illness prevention, wellness promotion and education, examination and clinical diagnosis, and therapeutic and rehabilitation of injuries and medical conditions.

How do I get cleared to participate in athletics?

Completion of the Athletic Registration Packet is required (annually) to participate in athletics and must be completed by June 30th. This packet is completed via SportsWare Online (SWOL). All forms can be electronically signed within SWOL except for the physical (PPE). For further information regarding accessing SWOL and completing the process please refer to the Sports Medicine tab on our athletic website and click on Registration Packet.

Who can complete my Preparticipation Physical Exam (PPE)?

Per CIF guidelines, a licensed physician (MD or DO) with sports medicine specialization experience or advanced practice registered nurse is the most qualified person to conduct the PPE.

What should I do if my student-athlete is injured and an AT is not accessible?

For an emergency call 911 or transport them to the nearest ER/Urgent Care for evaluation. For any non-emergent injury, it is the coach’s responsibility to inform a member of the Sports Medicine staff for follow-up regarding evaluation and treatment.

Are appointments necessary for evaluation/treatment with the Sports Medicine Staff?

With the Athletic Trainer, no. The Athletic Training Room (ATR) is accessible during free periods, passing periods, lunch, and after school. With the Physical Therapist (PT), yes.  Any injury being treated by the PT will require appointments.

Can non-athletes see the AT?

Yes. In the absence of a school nurse, the AT can assess and make recommendations for non-athletes.
